De kathedraal van Canterbury, het jaar des Heren 1273. Robert Kilwardby, schriftgeleerde en dominicaans priester, wordt geïnstalleerd als aartsbisschop. Op dit hoogtepunt in zijn carrière dwalen zijn gedachten af naar Myriam, de grote liefde in zijn leven. Toen hij veertig jaar eerder in Parijs aankwam om er te studeren werd hij hopeloos verliefd op een joods meisje. Myriam beantwoordde zijn gevoelens, maar liefde tussen een christen en een joodse was in de dertiende eeuw verboden. Haar vader weet haar over te halen tot een huwelijk met Jacob Anatolio, een beroemd Provençaals geleerde.
Robert kan zich niet bij zijn verlies neerleggen en probeert Myriam terug te vinden. Zijn zoektocht voert hem van Parijs via Rome naar Napels. Inkt en vuur speelt zich af in een Europa dat beheerst wordt door de tweestrijd tussen de paus en Frederik de Tweede, in een tijd van onverdraagzaamheid die in vele opzichten lijkt op de onze.
